“We must be certain that we are measuring what was within our control.”

— Dr. Glen Brown, reasoning recorded with the Epoch Law of Evidence, 11 September 2026

The record

On 11 September 2026 Dr. Glen Brown decreed the fifth governing law of the house, the Epoch Law of Evidence. Its operative rule is a single sentence. Closed trades produced under one version of the machine may not be used as evidence for decisions about another, unless the matter under examination is a defect. The law was issued with a decree record the same day. Within hours it had been applied to the very analysis that accompanied it, and before the day ended it had produced a second ruling, which the house now calls ground zero. This instalment follows that day.

The question

Every trading house that improves its machine faces the same problem. By September 2026 the GATS machine had been changed many times in a few weeks: its hedge had been resized and its release rule replaced, its capacity gates had been re-measured, and its stops and protections had been revised. Each change was justified and each was recorded. Taken together, however, they left the house’s ledgers holding a mixture of trades closed under many different sets of rules.

The conventional answer is to pool the history and let its size compensate for its mixture. The longer the record, the industry reasons, the more it can be trusted. He reached the opposite conclusion and gave his reason directly.

“When several variables are being adjusted at once, cause and effect cannot be separated. It is better to pivot now and use the new data as it arrives than to go back.”

Reasoning recorded with the Epoch Law of Evidence, 11 September 2026

The law

The law defines an epoch as the period that opens when a change to the machine is deployed and closes when the next one is. A trade belongs to the epoch in which it was closed, not the one in which it was opened. The reason given is exact. The exit is what the exit rule governed, so the rule in force at the close is the rule whose behaviour the trade records.

The exception for defects is the most carefully built part of the law, because an exception written loosely would soon consume the rule. The decree therefore supplies its own test. Evidence from another epoch is admissible when it shows that a mechanism behaves incorrectly by construction, a property it would exhibit on any path and in any period. It is inadmissible when it measures how well a mechanism performed. A defect is a fact about the design; a performance is a fact about the design meeting particular markets. Only the first travels across epochs.

What the law cost at once

The law took effect immediately, and the decree record states what it destroyed. Every setting in the hedge’s risk law had been calibrated on trades from earlier epochs, and each of those calibrations was withdrawn as a basis for decision. Several figures the desk had relied upon in the preceding days were struck from use in the same act.

The record also states something less comfortable, and its candour is characteristic. At the moment of issue the law could not be enforced at the level of the data. The house’s ledgers did not record which build of the machine had produced each row, so no ledger could yet be filtered by epoch. The decree named the missing instrument, a full build identity stamped on every row at the moment it is written, as owed. The house did not wait for the instrument before adopting the law. It adopted the law and recorded the gap between what the law required and what the house could yet do.

Two corollaries

He accepted two corollaries the same day, and both have governed the house since. The first separates two kinds of change. A defect cut restores behaviour that was already intended, and it does not open a new epoch for the settings it leaves untouched. A parameter cut changes intended behaviour, and it opens a new epoch. Without the distinction, every correction of an error would reset the evidence on everything else, and the forward record would confound itself as badly as the backward one had.

The second corollary fixes the unit of evidence as the account within the epoch. Pooling results across accounts is treated as an assumption that must be earned, not a convenience to be taken. The record already held a demonstration. The same hedge rule had been read on two accounts in the same days and had given opposite answers, correct on one and seriously wrong on the other. A pooled reading would have averaged the two into a conclusion true of neither.

The law applied to its own makers

Later the same day a working position was put to him. If the changes of recent weeks had made the machine better, the equity line should show it, and the desk offered supporting figures on how long such an improvement would take to become visible. He identified the figures at once as products of the epoch the law had just closed.

“Once again, the argument rests on historical data.”

Ruling of 11 September 2026

The figures were withdrawn, and so was every estimate derived from them. What survived was only what could be shown from construction alone: that comparing paired outcomes cancels the market’s path in a way that comparing periods cannot, that a test which a defective mechanism can pass is not a test, and that a working hedge should make the equity line smoother rather than higher. The shape measures that followed were adopted with no prior value attached. Their baseline would be whatever the new epoch produced first.

The episode also produced a procedural rule. The epoch filter is to be declared before any data is loaded, not chosen after the analysis has been seen. Where a question genuinely requires a quantity from an earlier epoch, it is to be put to him as a ruling, not settled by argument after the fact.

Ground zero

“We are now at ground zero. In principle we proceed as though the machine had just started, and our only baseline is the current preset.”

Ruling of 11 September 2026

The day ended with the ruling that gives this instalment its title. Having closed the past as evidence, he drew the consequence for the present. Nothing carries forward as fact except what can be read in the machine’s current source and its current settings. The character the house had attributed to each account on the basis of its history was set aside, even where the account, its venue and its capital remained the same. The working order of analysis was inverted: first the mechanism, then the instrument that reads it, then the record of the current epoch, and never the ledger first.

The governing question changed with it. The house had been asking whether the machine was better than before. It now asks what a mechanism does, and how it would know if the mechanism were wrong. The first question can only be answered with history. The second can be answered from construction, and then confirmed by the epoch’s own record as it arrives.

He closed the ruling with a statement of method that Paper I has already quoted in part.

“We do not look back. We take what we have and look ahead, and we operate as serious engineers.”

Ruling of 11 September 2026

What the anatomy shows

Followed through a single day, one law shows five features of the mind that made it.

  • Evidence is valued by its provenance, not its quantity. A long record produced under mixed causes is treated as weaker than a short record produced under known ones.
  • An exception is written with its own test, so that it cannot grow to swallow the rule. The defect carve-out admits facts about design and excludes facts about performance.
  • A law is adopted even when the house cannot yet fully enforce it, and the gap is written into the record rather than concealed. The missing instrument was named on the day of issue.
  • The law is applied first to the house’s own analysis. The figures withdrawn on the day of the decree were the desk’s, offered in support of a position he was considering.
  • A loss of evidence is converted into a method. Ground zero turned the closing of the past into a discipline for the future: construction first, measurement second, and nothing believed that the current machine cannot show.

The epigraph states the principle beneath all five. A house can only learn from what it controlled. Results produced under rules it has since changed record the past machine, not the present one, and the person who governs the present machine has chosen to be instructed by it alone.
